Patience with the Process

Patience with the Process

There's few things that most of my patients have in common.  Each person is a unique mixture of experiences, beliefs, behaviors, and worries.  However, a few things bind them together.  One of which is struggling to have patience with the process.

Patience with the process means not hurrying through the work to get to the final product.  For example, when I was in graduate school I was really struggling with anxiety.  I obsessed over my grades, my performance, and my future.  I stressed myself, my teachers, and my fellow students out.  Looking back, it's something I regret, because it robbed me of joy.  I love school and it comes relatively easy to me, so this is something that I should've enjoyed.  But I didn't.

As the saying goes, anything worth having is worth working for.  This means that for every goal you have, there's a subsequent journey you must take to get there.  I advise you to make a plan, follow it, and then enjoy every second of the journey.  Most of our life will be spent in one process or another and if you compare that to the actual time we spend enjoying the final product of our efforts, you'll see why it's so important to learn to love the journey.

This is something I have to remind myself of frequently and I work to cultivate my thinking so I can be present in each moment.  I want to experience life, both good and bad, because that is the full experience.  This type of non-judgmental mindfulness can lead to increased satisfaction with life and a deep sense of inner peace.

So, take a deep breath (or 10) and buckle up.  It's going to be a long ride.  Sit back and enjoy the view.
